Black and white is abstract; color is not. – Joel Sternfeld

Fashion is all about contrast whether you’re playing off different shapes or colors, contrast draws the eye.

When wearing neutral colors don’t be afraid to try bold styles. For instance, a pair of color block jeans is a trendy, fashion forward way up your #ootd game. A mixed patterned coat is a great play on the solid black peacoats flocking the city streets. Pull two contrasting pieces together with a solid garment like this crisp white button down.

Play up your basics by showing off your best fitting jeans and favorite sneakers. Elevate the look, throw on a staple dress coat that will lift you up from average New Yorker to style influencer. With a button down shirt underneath you add a piece of versatility to your outfit. Add a plaid scarf or cashmere hat to own the look, and you’re ready to take on a NYC weekend.

Oversized outerwear: comfy, chic, athleisure.

Anyone can throw on a hoodie and walk out the door, but in a fashion driven city, you might get a few looks…and not the ones you want.

Amp up your style by layering with an oversized denim jacket and pairing it with tapered trousers. Dress pants are breaking out of the office and becoming an essential in the athleisure movement. Stay comfortable with a cute pair of sneakers to explore the city in. A simple crossbody bag like the one shown here makes the outfit a bit chicer, you could also take this as an opportunity to give your outfit a pop of color.

People like to say that nothing is better than a man in a suit, but I like to argue, nothing is better than a man in a well-tailored suit.

Whether you’re tailoring your pants to rock the skinny leg trend or adjusting arm-pocket seams fit just on top of the shoulder, tailoring is vital to looking your best in a suit.

Aside from tailoring, my second piece of advice when wearing a suit is to make it your own.   In a large city, thriving with businessmen, stand out by going for an all over plaid print or even opting for a color outside of your neutral comfort zone. Get inspired by this New Yorker, trade in your penny loafers for some leather combat boots. He further proclaimed is personal style with a studded belt. If belts aren’t your thing, watches can also add a unique touch.

Eye-catching, trendy, essential, faux fur.

Faux fur can be seen around the city this season in so many variations; collars, jackets, vests, even pom poms on hats. The trend is even making an appearance in both men’s and women’s fashion.

When wearing a statement piece like a faux fur coat, its best to keep the rest of your outfit simple. A comfy sweater and basic denim will do the trick. In this case, it’s all about styling the outfit with accessories and I think this New Yorker nailed it!

Try adding a classic touch with brown loafers and some fun socks for a bit more edge. Swing your favorite handbag or backpack over your shoulders and you’re ready to hit the streets.

Denim on denim, the New York way.

Layering denim can be a bit tricky. Do you wear the same wash on top as you do on the bottom? Do you mix acid wash with a solid jean? Should denim on denim be worn at all?

The answer is YES.

One of the easiest ways to pull off this look is to layer two different shades of denim like this New Yorker. The light wash denim jacket offers a high contrast to the black jeans. Pair with your favorite shirt, like this tie dye one, and some combat boots.

But most importantly, when playing around with trends like denim on denim, remember that there are not any rules to fashion, so just have fun!

Athleisure is making its mark on the city and fashion industry as a whole.

Casual Friday isn’t only on Friday’s anymore and New Yorkers are embracing it! The sneaker craze is growing and companies like Nike and Adidas are stepping out of the gym and onto the streets.

Just a few easy steps and you’ll be joining the athleisure movement. Sneakers, sweats and a touch of personal style. Along with the athleisure trend, neutral colored sneakers have been on the rise and go great with just about everything. Slip into a comfortable hoodie or even some joggers and you’re living the trend, it’s that easy. Don’t forget to express yourself by adding some accessories that scream, you! This New Yorker made his statement with a few touches of gold jewelry.

This New Yorker is transitioning into fall with this preppy ensemble.

With the autumn months upon us and the temperatures dropping, layers are your new best friend! Trying layering different hews of blue, like seen here, or any color of your choice. Working with in the same color family can be surprisingly complimentary, especially when paired with a crisp, white top.

Pairing a boyfriend blazer over a demin circle skirt, gives a chic schoolgirl feel. Add a little edge by pulling out the bottom of the top, for a laid back look, and finish the outfit off with a pair of knee high boots.

Meet The Blogger

Olivia here, welcome to The Haute Community!

Before launching the site, I thought it would be nice for all of you to have an insight to the woman behind the screen.

I am currently a student at The Fashion Institute of Technology, studying Advertising and Marketing Communications. You could say that I’m an all-out fashion/beauty enthusiast… But who isn’t these days?

Inspiration for my personal style comes from all of you! From the media to the streets, I love to experiment with new trends and feed off of the different fashions I see throughout my NYC community.

Hence the idea for The Haute Community.

After reading hundreds of style blogs where the focus is the blogger themselves, I thought it was time to look at fashion blogging from a different angle.

My original inspiration came from the famous blog, Humans of New York, highlighting New Yorkers and their stories.

With a twist, my idea for this blog is to put New Yorkers and their personal style in the spot light. I hope for their features to inspire and impact the style and fashion choices of my readers.

All in all, I am just a young woman trying to make her impact on the fashion industry.

Stay inspired New York,

– Olivia
