Coordinate your beret with your trench coat.

A lot of people are scared to be too matchy-matchy when it comes to putting together an outfit, but this New Yorker pulled it off!

Matching the color of your coat to your hat is a perfect way to balance a look. Wearing the same color on different parts of the body allow it to stand out instead of turning into a potential sea of red. This New Yorker used a red beret and wool coat for her pops of color and neutralized the rest of the outfit with an all-black base. Also, try mixing textures like leather and velvet for even more contrast, as seen here.

Outfit Details:

  • Coat – Thrifted
  • Beret – Store on West 4th
  • Top – Thrifted
  • Pants – Thrifted
  • Fanny Pack – Store on Canal St.

Throw on your favorite fur vest for a Friday afternoon stroll down 5th Avenue.

Fur and faux fur is all the rage during the winter months in NYC. From coats to vests, New Yorkers are loving the fur trend and don’t seem to be giving it up anytime soon.

Whether you’re looking to dress to impress or keep it casual, a fur vest is a veristale piece that should be in everyone’s wardrobe. For an elegant look, try a full-length fur vest like this New Yorker. Layer with a cozy turtleneck, add some cute boots and you’re good to go. If the idea of wearing a heavy fur vest seems like too much effort, opt for a light-weight, faux fur vest. Pair it with a matching sweatsuit and casual sneakers. This look allows you to feel put together and comfortable at the same time.

The 1970’s called and they LOVE your pants.

This groovy New Yorker is rocking a head to toe vintage look with pieces dating back to the seventies. Bell bottoms are have been returning to the shelves of mainstream stores like Zara and H&M over the past year, but consider yourself lucky if you find an authentic pair.

If you’re down to try a retro style, bell bottoms are a great way to accentuate your curves. Tuck in a bright sweater or tie a vintage tee at the waist to maintain the hourglass illusion.  Make your outfit flow from top to bottom by layering with an oversized cape coat, as seen here. Don’t forget to wear a heeled bootie to elongate your legs and avoid being weighed down by the oversized coat.

A cropped orange puffer, I could not resist!

After naming UltraViolet the 2018 Color of the year, Pantone included Oriole, a vibrant orange, as part of the year’s color scheme.

Wearing bright orange is a fun way to add some life to your outfit in the middle of an NYC winter. This New Yorker chose to sport the color with a trendy cropped puffer coat. When styling vibrant, colors keep the rest of your outfit simple and allow the colorful piece to make a statement. If you’re going for a coat like this one, try pairing with pair vintage jeans with a raw cut hem. The hem adds an extra flare but doesn’t compete with the coat for attention.

  • Jeans – Vintage Levi’s (Purchased from Poshmark)
  • Shirt – Gap
  • Hat – Carhart

I dare you to enter your closet and make an outfit out of pieces that don’t traditionally go together. You never know what you may come up with, it could be your new favorite look!

Here we have a two-piece jersey and shorts set paired with more traditional pieces, like a black blazer and oxfords. The trick to pulling off a look like this is having the confidence to try new things.  For this outfit, athletic wear has been turned into an office-friendly look by layering with a classic turtleneck and blazer. This New Yorker represented her personal style with studded oxfords, a trendier version of a staple shoe.

Never underestimate the power of a thrifty find.

This New Yorker had me stopped in my tracks. Her flowing faux leather skirt had me in awe, come to find out it was thrifted.

Digging and sifting through racks on racks of clothes is worth the search when you land a treasure like this one. Style a dramatic piece like this with more simple ones to create a balance. Tie a graphic tee at the waist to add some dimension and layer over a denim jacket. The distressing and patchwork on the jacket gives the outfit a signature street style feel, making you the ultimate cool girl.

Black and white is abstract; color is not. – Joel Sternfeld

Fashion is all about contrast whether you’re playing off different shapes or colors, contrast draws the eye.

When wearing neutral colors don’t be afraid to try bold styles. For instance, a pair of color block jeans is a trendy, fashion forward way up your #ootd game. A mixed patterned coat is a great play on the solid black peacoats flocking the city streets. Pull two contrasting pieces together with a solid garment like this crisp white button down.

Oversized outerwear: comfy, chic, athleisure.

Anyone can throw on a hoodie and walk out the door, but in a fashion driven city, you might get a few looks…and not the ones you want.

Amp up your style by layering with an oversized denim jacket and pairing it with tapered trousers. Dress pants are breaking out of the office and becoming an essential in the athleisure movement. Stay comfortable with a cute pair of sneakers to explore the city in. A simple crossbody bag like the one shown here makes the outfit a bit chicer, you could also take this as an opportunity to give your outfit a pop of color.

  • Hoodie – Forever 21
  • Pants – Thrifted

Eye-catching, trendy, essential, faux fur.

Faux fur can be seen around the city this season in so many variations; collars, jackets, vests, even pom poms on hats. The trend is even making an appearance in both men’s and women’s fashion.

When wearing a statement piece like a faux fur coat, its best to keep the rest of your outfit simple. A comfy sweater and basic denim will do the trick. In this case, it’s all about styling the outfit with accessories and I think this New Yorker nailed it!

Try adding a classic touch with brown loafers and some fun socks for a bit more edge. Swing your favorite handbag or backpack over your shoulders and you’re ready to hit the streets.
